Sourced from two remarkable vineyard sites in the Wilyabrup and Redgate regions, our Margaret River wines represent the application of our Swinney grape growing and winemaking philosophies to two highly maritime sites both located west of Caves Road and within just a few kilometres of the Indian Ocean.
The Brookland Valley Vineyard is one of Margaret River’s exceptional vineyard sites, one that has supplied fruit to some of Australia’s most highly regarded wines and has rightly earned a reputation as one of Margaret River’s great Chardonnay vineyards.
Planted to Gingin clone Chardonnay in 1984, the vineyard is less than three kilometres from the Indian Ocean and shaped by the Wilyabrup Creek that runs through the middle of the property. We purchased this outstanding site in 2022 and farm it under a long-term arrangement for a respected fruit customer. We are delighted to release our first Chardonnay with grapes sourced from this vineyard.
Our Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Mann family’s Calgardup Vineyard at Redgate. The longstanding relationship between the Swinney and Mann families, together with Rob Mann’s deep connection to Margaret River, brought this exceptional vineyard into the Swinney story. Planted exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon and farmed organically, the site combines meticulous viticulture with a setting uniquely suited to the variety.
Each vineyard shares a close relationship with the Indian Ocean. Situated west of Caves Road and only a few kilometres from the coast, both experience a strong maritime influence. Ocean breezes moderate temperature, extend ripening and help preserve freshness and natural acidity in the fruit.
Shaped by the ocean, these two exceptional sites are the foundation of our Margaret River wines. Capturing this connection to place, the artwork on our Margaret River labels, by award-winning West Australian artist Josephine Johnson, is an abstract representation of the relationship of between our Wilyabrup vineyard and the Indian Ocean.
